After the United States threatened to impose tariffs on about $11 billion worth of European Union goods on the 8th, the European Union also issued a list of about $20 billion worth of American goods on the 17th, threatening to impose tariffs.
Cecilia Middot, member of the European Commission in charge of trade affairs, said in a statement on July 17 that the European Union must safeguard a fair competitive environment for the European aircraft manufacturing industry, but the European Union does not want to compete with the United States. The statement also expressly released the desire to resolve the issue through negotiations.
Malmstrom said: & ldquo; if there is no other way (to solve this problem), we need to be prepared to take countermeasures. But I still believe that dialogue should be the ultimate solution for such important partners as the EU and the United States, especially in resolving this long-standing dispute. The EU remains willing to discuss with the United States as long as it does not set preconditions and aims to achieve a fair outcome. & rdquo;
The list released on the same day by the European Union covers a wide range of products, from aircraft to chemicals and agricultural products. The EU will conduct public consultation on this list. The EU said that the final tariff on US goods would also take into account the WTO arbitration decision in the Boeing subsidy case.
The anti-subsidy dispute between the United States and the European Union, which focuses on Boeing and Airbus, has a long history. In 2004, the United States filed a lawsuit against the World Trade Organization accusing the European Union of providing illegal subsidies to Airbus in various forms, and the European Union subsequently sued the World Trade Organization against the United States Government for providing huge illegal subsidies to Boeing. In this regard, the WTO has ruled that both the United States and the European Union have the problem of providing illegal subsidies to their aviation enterprises.
The U.S. government has accused the European Union of illegally subsidizing Airbus of adversely affecting the United States. On the 8th, the US Trade Representative Office initiated the procedure of Article 301 of the US Trade Law of 1974 to impose tariffs on EU imports worth about $11 billion. European Commission officials subsequently said that the European Union might retaliate against Boeing for its illegal subsidies to the United States.
